Self cannot be made a center; self can receive no honor. If we plan according to our own ideas, the Lord will leave us to our own mistakes. But when, after following His directions, we are brought into strait places, He will deliver us. We are not to give up in discouragement, but in every emergency we are to seek help from Him who has infinite resources at His command. Often we shall be surrounded with trying circumstances, and then, in the fullest confidence, we must depend upon God. He will keep every soul that is brought into perplexity through trying to keep the way of the Lord.”

- Desire of Ages- 369.1 (via jalgonzalez)

Ellen G. I cannot believe our national debate has come to this point – where we are singling out parts of the population and making them more vulnerable to violence.”

-
Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY) criticized the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act saying the bill passed on Wednesday puts women’s lives in jeopardy because it excludes access to services for immigrant, LGBT and Native American women. (via nbclatino)

I mean, “singling out parts of the population and making them more vulnerable to violence” is what institutional oppression is - it’s just not always as visible as this.

I have little patience with efforts to make Scripture say something other than what it says, through appeals to linguistic or cultural subtleties. The exegetical situation is straightforward: we know what the text says…

I think it important to state clearly that we do, in fact, reject the straightforward commands of Scripture, and appeal instead to another authority when we declare that same-sex unions can be holy and good. And what exactly is that authority? We appeal explicitly to the weight of our own experience and the experience thousands of others have witnessed to, which tells us that to claim our own sexual orientation is in fact to accept the way in which God has created us. By so doing, we explicitly reject as well the premises of the scriptural statements condemning homosexuality — namely, that it is a vice freely chosen, a symptom of human corruption, and disobedience to God’s created order.”
”

- Luke Timothy Johnson, Homosexuality & the Church (via sungyak)

WHITEWASHING IN WRATH OF THE TITANS (2012): - “Andromeda is the...

WHITEWASHING IN WRATH OF THE TITANS (2012): - “Andromeda is the Ethiopian princess, whom Perseus rescued and married. She became queen of Mycenae and, after her death, a constellation and galaxy. Andromeda’s mother Cassiopea was extremely proud of her own beauty (and this is practically all we know about her). And so strong was the pride of this Ethiopian queen, that she could not help comparing her beauty with that of the immortal NEREIDS, boasting of being better than they all. For this reason the NEREIDS were angry, and Poseidon, sharing their wrath, sent a flood and a sea-monster to ravage the land [x].”

As stated in a post before, Andromeda has been whitewashed throughout the history of Greek Mythology/History. Its so entrenched in the minds of readers and scholars everywhere that the fact that she comes from and was born in Ethiopia (and is a woman of color) flies right over their heads. It doesn’t register. So it comes to no surprise that in WRATH OF THE TITANS, Andromeda is portrayed as a blonde, blue-eyed white woman, portrayed by British actress Rosamund Pike (Pride and Prejudice, 2005).

pangeasgarden:

Ever notice how when white people are murdered/kidnapped/abused/etc, they get scholarships set up, foundations set up, parks named after them, or laws signed in to their home state to honor them, but when Black people suffer the same tragedies, we get… put on trial for our own deaths?

We get ignored. We get shoved out and told to get over it. We get told that it was expected, deserved, etc. Hm. I watch the same channel all day (Investigation Discovery) and it’s 90% crimes against/done by white people, so, it isn’t just “isolated” incidents I am alluding to.

The AMBER alert was created because of a white child. America’s Most Wanted was created over a white child. Are these things great institutions? Of course! Are they needed? Of course! Do they come through for those who need it most? Not often. America grieves only over white deaths. All else fall to the wayside unless we make enough “fuss”, and even then, we’re only allotted 3 months time… while others get 16 years (here’s looking at you America, and your obsession with Jon Benet Ramsey).

My fear of having a child grows more and more each day as I come to realize we are still only looked at as three-fifths of a person, not a whole individual with humanity and spirit.

Wow. Powerful post. It makes me think about Asha Degree. On February 14, 2000, 9-year-old Asha Degree left her home in Shelby, NC in the middle of the night and never came back. I really didn’t see the same type of attention given to her case as the Jon Benet Ramsey and other cases. I know why, but this post reminded me of her and her family. February 14 is her parents anniversary, so it’s especially hard on them. They’ve been in my heart every since this case opened more than 12 years ago. R. I. Power Asha.

http://www.wbtv.com/story/16931539/missing-young-girls-case-gets-new-light-12-years-after-disappearance

Thank you for sharing; there are many stories similar to this young girls’, and just the same, not getting the attention they need. It just saddens me we are not honored in our deaths — our deaths are not seen as beautiful. Our dead are never romanticized or even given their humanity.

I read an article where last year, more than half the missing people (accumulated, not JUST from 2011), were African-American. You wouldn’t know it by the way news outlets handle things.

CPC Sermons - Overview of sermons before [Hunger For Holiness 8/27/11 Sermon]

4 Pillars of Christian Life

Prayer (praying to Christ)

Bible Study (reading/learning about Christ)

Worship (worshiping Christ)

Christian Service (working with Christ)

These pillars keep us connected and must be exercised regularly. You can’t pray too much, read about God too much, etc.

In previous sermons we learned that…

SERMON I
- Genuine encounters with the Holy God will change you mentally, spiritually even physically. Worshiping should change.
- God’s holy presence can be a blessing to those that worship properly or a consuming fire to others. Not everyone that comes to worship gets blessed some get cursed. The word becomes condemnation to them as 1) they didn’t come to worship and 2) don’t plan to do anything that they’ve learned. So rather than the word being a testimony for them it becomes a witness against them.
- When you do not know the Lord it is hard to reverence Him. So a lot of irreverence is due to a shallow concept of who God.
- We have to prepare ourselves when we come to the Lord, physically, mentally and morally.

SERMON II
- Getting Israel (the people) out of Egypt was easy for God but getting Egypt (customs, worship, lifestyle) out of Israel was very difficult for God.
- It is difficult to become God minded on sabbath when you have been secular minded all week. Which is why some of our worship suffers. You have to spend all week detaching yourself from the secular world and stay detached. After sabbath is over stay in Christ on Sunday, Monday, etc.
- Our long years of being influenced by the world causes us to long for its priorities even when we try to worship.
- In order to truly worship God you must love the Lord & despise the world.

SERMON III
- We learned that the sabbath is not only a feast but the first feast (Lev. 23).
- The sabbath is the foundation of worship. It helps to prepare you for the following week.
- The sabbath feast celebrates God as creator
- Worshiping sabbath is to worship Christ, Heavens creative source.

Media Link : http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/cpc-sermons/id480340695

ourafrica:

Houses of Africa.

These are typical, middle class homes from different areas of Africa.

This is Africa, our Africa

Stupid Nigger

lifeofanappyheadedfatchic:

I just had the craziest experience. It happened so fast but damn… wow.

I worked overnight at my site. I like to vary things up so I can supervise all of my staff, meet tenants who are night owls, and get paperwork done. I left about 8:30 and was happy to get home in 20 minutes. I came into my building, headphones on, and went in the elevator and pushed 6, which is my floor. Our elevator is one where one door slides open and you have to push the other outwards. I didn’t push the door too hard or fast because I’m well aware that sometimes people are standing behind it, having had people almost knock me out. My elderly White neighbor was standing behind it. I didn’t hit her, but I guess she was shocked enough that she jumped back. I said “Excuse me” but not “I’m sorry” because I didn’t feel like I did anything wrong. Mind you, this woman walks with one of those roller walkers, which she had almost pushed against the door. Still, I didn’t throw it open and I waited for her to back up before moving forward. I guess in her efforts to move herself back (she shouldn’t have been that close), she fell backwards. She gasped loudly and I heard her husband in their apartment yell “What happened??” I leaned forward to offer her assistance and then it happened. She pulled her arm back, recoiling from me, and I heard her say under her breath kinda “Don’t touch me stupid nigger”.

*shock face*

I was stunned. Paralyzed almost. Mind you, this was in front of my apartment. For like a good 5 seconds, I stood there leaned over her. Then, her husband comes out… and I’m stunned AGAIN.

He is Black.

He rushes over to help her up and I go into my apartment. My kitchen is by the door and I’m thinking of finding a knife. But nawl, Martin Luther the King didn’t have dreams of interracial unity for me to react in such a way. Besides, she is old, and old people have no filter.

But still. This happens at like 8:55.

I come in, take my clothes off and start cleaning my bathroom. About 9:10 there is a knock on my door. I’m expecting my dad, so I go to answer. I open the door and there are two police officers at my door. *screech* What? I ask “Yes?” One officer is Black and one looks maybe Italian. I see the woman behind them. I’m thinking “that was fast” but I’m stunned, still. Then again, this is a predominantly White neighborhood, so that’s standard. Guess they were patrolling the area. It went basically like this.

“Ma’am did you have an altercation with this woman?”

“No”

“We got a call that she was assaulted by her neighbor. She said you pushed her when you got off the elevator”

“No I didnt. She fell on her own because she was too close. She jumped back when I opened the door. She called me a stupid nigger when I tried to help her”

Black cop turns and looks at her. Woman neither confirms nor denies, but focuses on the Italian cop.

“Why would I push an old woman? Come on now!”

“Ma’am calm down” - Black cop

“No! she called me a stupid nigger when I tried to help her up after she tripped over her walker. I’m fucking mad right now!”

“Don’t curse ma’am. Dont need that language” Black cop

I stare at him

“I didnt do anything wrong”

Husband from their apartment “I told you not to call them”

“Can I help you with anything else officer? Or can I close my door now?” - said with much attitude.

Black cop sighs. “Take care ma’am. Just… keep your distance.

I close my door.

I stand there for a good 45-60 seconds. I hear muffled voices. Guess they’re talking to her. I look through the peephole and see them talking to her, gesturing for her to go back into her apartment I guess.

I come to Twitter… livid.

Like… really?

Oh, hell yes. Not only does this cop get a taste of his own medicine — being detained by an elderly black woman he had been abusing — but then this same woman goes on to get a settlement pay-out from the city for her troubles.

To me, a social revolution would essentially consist of people all over the country conducting such “citizens arrests” against all of the police, and detaining them until such time as they were deemed to no longer pose a threat to society.

===

An elderly woman got the last word after locking a police officer in her basement, and later suing the police.

Venus Green, who was 87 when she was handcuffed, roughed up and injured by police, will receive $95,000 as part of a settlement with Baltimore City. The city chose to settle the case instead of taking a chance in front of a jury.

In July 2009, Green’s grandson, Tallie, was shot and wounded. Tallie said he was shot at a convenience store, but police insisted it happened inside Green’s house and that the shooter was either Tallie or Green.

“Police kept questioning him. They wouldn’t let the ambulance attendant treat him,” Green said. “So, I got up and said, ‘Sir, would you please let the attendants treat him? He’s in pain,’” Green said.

Police wanted to go the basement, where Tallie lived, but Green refused on the basis that the police did not have a warrant.

“I said, ‘No, you don’t have a warrant. You don’t go down in my house like that. He wasn’t shot in here.’”

A struggle ensued between a male officer and Green.

“He dragged me, threw me across the chair, put handcuffs on me and just started calling me the ‘b’ name. He ridiculed me,” Green said.

An officer went into the basement and Green locked him inside …
